Oakland needs help all over on the defensive side of the ball and with most of the top pass rushers off the board, the Raiders decide to take a gamble on the high risk/high reward Olivier Vernon. Oakland struggled to generate a pass rush last year and Vernon has the type of athletic ability that teams covet. He plays with a great burst and is exactly what you look for in terms of size and speed for a 3-4 outside linebacker. Matt Shaughnessy is an unrestricted free agent next offseason and is probably better suited for a four-man front anyway. Vernon hasn't even scratched the surface of his potential, and he may never get there but he's a solid gamble here at the tail end of the third round.
