The Saints have done well with the signings of Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne via free agency but they still need to improve their defensive line and secondary. 30-year-old Will Smith is very solid and Cameron Jordan looked okay as a rookie but Crawford adds depth to the defensive line and can be used as part of a rotation early and groomed as an eventual replacement for Will Smith as he continues to age. Crawford is a high upside prospect who has great athletic ability and is a solid pass rusher despite being rather raw. The Saints can't afford to not go defense with their first pick and they have plenty of other good options here as well.
